Strawberry fields

I'm the proud owner of about 20 pounds of handpicked strawberries as of this morning. We braved the 90 degree heat wave and went on our first berry picking adventure ever. Next time I'll pick a cooler day following a dry spell. Standing ankle-deep in mud and straw was not exactly what I had envisioned for this trip but I'm convinced the effort will pay off. I'm spending this afternoon scouring cookbooks and web sites for the perfect pie recipe and other ideas to ensure that this bounty does not go to waste. I'd love suggestions! strawberry

  1. Freezer jam! I make it every year, and it always tastes as fresh as the day I picked the berries! Plus, you can use the jam in recipes like oatmeal bars (PW's bars) or as syrup on pancakes -- so many uses!

    Where'd you go picking?

  2. i think you could freeze the berries for the cake. But you would probably want to strain them a little. After they've been in the freezer they tend to get watery. And most definitely Strawberry Freezer Jam! Straight from the Sure-gel or is it Sure-jel ? Anyway, the recipe is in the box. It's the BEST ! ooxx`jodi

  3. Ok, you guys win! I'm trying the freezer jam. I'm making a pie today and then jam with the remaining batch. Then I'm heading over to PW's site to get some recipes to use it with. :)

  4. Oh, and p.s. Stef--We went to Thompson's farm in Bristol, WI. It just might be worth a drive for you guys next year. They do raspberries in Sep. and pumpkins in Oct., we're definitely going back.

    Thanks for the tips!
